Korean Grammar-How to Speak Formally About the Past

In our previous post, we looked at the informal polite style (-์/์ด์). Today, we will learn how to form the Formal Polite Past Tense (-์์ต๋๋ค / -์์ต๋๋ค).
This style is used in formal settings, such as news broadcasts, business meetings, public presentations, military contexts, or when speaking respectfully to someone you don’t know well.
1. Core Structure & Rule Breakdown
To form the formal past tense, you attach -์์ต๋๋ค, -์์ต๋๋ค, or ํ์ต๋๋ค to the verb stem (the verb after removing -๋ค).

2. Past Tense of “To Be / Not To Be” (์ด๋ค / ์๋๋ค)
- Noun + ์ด์์ต๋๋ค / ์์ต๋๋ค(was / were)
- Ending in Consonant: ํ์ + ์ด์์ต๋๋ค โ ํ์์ด์์ต๋๋ค (was a student)
- Ending in Vowel: ์์ฌ + ์์ต๋๋ค โ ์์ฌ์์ต๋๋ค (was a doctor)
- Noun + ์ด/๊ฐ ์๋์์ต๋๋ค(was not / were not)
- ์์ฌ๊ฐ ์๋์์ต๋๋ค (was not a doctor)
