Welcome back to Korean study! Today, we will learn how to change verbs and adjectives into the Past Tense (-์•˜/์—ˆ์–ด์š”).

If you already know how to form the present tense (-์•„/์–ด์š”), learning the past tense is super simple!

1. Grammar Focus: Rules & Conjugation (๋ฌธ๋ฒ• ๊ทœ์น™)

To form the informal polite past tense in Korean, attach -์•˜์–ด์š” / -์—ˆ์–ด์š” / -ํ–ˆ์–ด์š” to the verb or adjective stem.

Rule 1. Verb/Adjective Stem Ending in Vowels ‘ใ…’ or ‘ใ…—’ โ†’ Add -์•˜์–ด์š”

When the last vowel of the stem is ใ… (a) or ใ…— (o), add -์•˜์–ด์š”.

  • ์•‰๋‹ค (anjda / to sit)โ†’ ์•‰ + ์•˜์–ด์š” = ์•‰์•˜์–ด์š” (anj-asseoyo / sat)
  • ๋ฐ›๋‹ค (batda / to receive)โ†’ ๋ฐ› + ์•˜์–ด์š” = ๋ฐ›์•˜์–ด์š” (bad-asseoyo / received)
  • ์‚ด๋‹ค (salda / to live)โ†’ ์‚ด + ์•˜์–ด์š” = ์‚ด์•˜์–ด์š” (sal-asseoyo / lived)
